Weekend art happening
Sunday was the art project....here's what happened...
Seven local artists were asked to be group leaders. We met a few days
before the project and decided to use the theme of creating a ritual
celebration of the seven days of the week. The name of each day of the
week is associated with a planet, a god, and an element. This type of
relationship is found in both Greek and Norse Mythology as well as the
most basic of Astrology texts, so it is not my idea, or anything new,
but I did recently read a book which was particularly fun called,
"Making the Gods Work for You" by Caroline W. Casey. We explored all
the nooks and crannies of the hostel, checking out where we would work
with our groups and collected all sorts of odd trash which we stashed
in a stairwell. We agreed to start with a full group warm up session at
11 am, split into our smaller groups by numbering off, and come back
together at 4 in the afternoon so each group could share.
WARM UP GAMES
First was Oli's.....
Outside we played a game where the group divides in half forming two
opposing lines. The first group secretly decides on a movie, they link
arms and stomp toward the other group shouting "Here we come! Here we
come!" They stop at a short distance from the "Other" group and start
acting out the movie. The "Other" group tries to guess the movie and
when they get it right the acting group tries to run back to it's home
while the "Other" group tries to catch them. Caught members have to
join the "Other" group. Now it is the "Other" group's turn....
Second warm up...with Hera...
A South African roll call where we dance in a circle chanting a welcome
word while each person runs into the center to shout their name.
Final warm up....with Hildur....
Inside chairs (one per person) are arranged in a circle. We stand on
the chairs. Choose one chair for the letter A and arrange ourselves
alphabetically by our first names while walking on the chairs in a
clockwise direction without going backwards, or touching the floor. So,
for example, if you find you passed your place...you have to circle all
the way around. Sometimes it is tricky to keep your balance on the
chairs when passing, but thats also the fun of the whole game.
