IntroductionSvona gerum við - Vi lærer af hinanden is a project that was arranged in connection with the 80 year anniversary of the Nordic Association of Iceland the 29th of September 2002. The aims of the Nordic association are to strengthen Nordic co-operation especially regarding social, cultural and environmental issues and the project was to emphasize that. The aim of the program was to evaluate at the status of the Local Agenda 21 project in typical Nordic communities and use the opportunity to activate young people's interest in their surroundings and future. The already established twintown connections between Nordic communities both benefited the program and one of the functions of the program was to support those connections. Twenty-seven communities from six twintown chains in the five Nordic countries were involved in the project. The first stage of the project was to find
participants from the communities that were involved. With the help of
the local divisions of the Nordic Association and the local schools a
group of environmentally aware youths at the ages of 15-18 years old
was put together. The
participants were asked to visit a local institution, a factory and a
nursing home with the assistance of the local Agenda 21 project
managers. With the help of specially designed checklists they were able
to report the concise status of these companies and institutions
environmental plan. On
April 1st 2003 the participants were invited to their Icelandic
twintowns where they worked on projects connected to the local Agenda
21 plan. On
April 5th all participants gathered in Reykjavik where they attended
the Stefnumót 21- Aktivitetets Forum 21. The conference was held to
gather the experience of the participants and come to a conclusion.
That was done under the leadership of a group of creative individuals. We would like to thank our sponsors:
Thanks to Slippfélagið for paint and to Verkfæralagerinn for other art supplies. |
