ConferenceThe whole group gathered in Reykjavik on April 5th where the next part of the project would take place. After a refreshing daytrip to explore a cave and bathe in the Blue Lagoon the heat was back on for Stefnumot 21/Aktivitetets Forum 21, on April 6th. First Sigurborg Kr. Hannesdottir from Alta Consulting presented the checklist results. After that participants undertook the project of emulating nature within the premises of The Youth Hostel in Laugardalur. They worked in groups under the guidance of seven creative leaders supervised by the American artist Holly Hughes. It was exciting to watch the groups at work and although some of the participants did not find this creative work very relevant to the project as a whole most of them found it fun and inspirational. Or as one of them wrote in the evaluation: "This creative work was fun. It means that you get even more interested in the issue. It is easy to lose interest by just working with numbers in a text." Here are Holly's own thoughts about the workshop from her web journal, www.holly.it.is: The goal of the workshop will be to gain a broader vision of the environmental picture, and understand how each of us is an important piece of this big puzzle. Ultimately, the health of the earth begins with each of us becoming responsible in our own lives; that means starting in our own homes and neighborhoods. The hostel will be our home for two days, and we will consider the energy use and trash in that home. I have already discovered a lot of exciting raw materials...in the hostel's "dispose of" pile. For starters there are a lot of things left by past visitors including many tents and camping things, odd pieces of clothes, old mattresses and sheets and chairs and cups and old light fixtures... Here are accounts of what happened each day with pictures. |
